One of Austin's curiosities is the Congress Avenue Bridge, spring and summer home of up to 1.5 million bats making up the largest bat colony in North America.  The Congress Avenue bridge over Town Lake completed in 1980 featured narrow, but deep openings that turned out to be perfect accomodations for Mexican free-tailed bats as they migrate North to gve birth.

The best bat views are in August although they are in residence as early as March.  It can take as long as 45 minutes for all the bats to exit the bridge.  Flights normally occur around 8 to 8:30 pm but could be earlier or later.  There are plenty of locations along Town Lake in the vicinity of Congress Avenue where you can watch the bats.  The bridge spans Town Lake at the cross streets of Cesar Chavez to the north and Barton Springs Road on the south. The Austin American-Statesman's Bat Observation Center is on the southeast side.

  • I have visited the bridge and LOVED the show...you can walk underneath and watch the bats before their evening flight. (Just remember...to keep your mouth closed) ;) It's fun for the whole family.
